Currently, it’s estimated that data centers running AI are on track to consume anywhere from 1 to 1.4% of the world’s total energy, equating to a staggering 260 to 340 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually. To put this into perspective, data centers already account for about 1% of the world’s energy consumption. In 2022 alone, they devoured between 240 to 340 TWh of electricity, highlighting their substantial appetite for power.
This figure remains relatively low considering the exponential growth in internet users and global internet traffic over the past decade, which has increased fifteen-fold since 2010. However, the impact on energy-related greenhouse gas emissions is significant, contributing to the urgent issue of climate change. Fortunately, the IT industry is not standing idly by. It’s actively pursuing measures to mitigate the environmental footprint of data centers. Some of these steps include embracing renewable energy sources, deploying advanced energy-efficient technologies, and constructing eco-friendly data centers designed to minimize their carbon footprint.
One notable example of innovation in energy-efficient data centers is the Inner Mongolia Information Park, owned by China Telecom. This facility often hailed as the world’s most power-consuming data center, harnesses a combination of altitude, hydroelectric, and thermal power sources to operate efficiently while minimizing its environmental impact. By exploring alternative energy solutions and embracing sustainable practices, data centers like this set the stage for a greener future in the IT industry.
